Dr. Matthew T. Provencher Will Receive the Dartmouth Distinguished Alumni Award

Matthew T. Provencher, MD, MBA, MC USNR (Ret.), MED ’98, a world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine expert, has been honored with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award from Dartmouth Medical School.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is one of Dartmouth Medical School’s highest honors, recognizing alumni wh o have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and impact in medicine, research, and public service. Recipients are celebrated for advancing their fields, mentoring the next generation of physicians, and embodying Dartmouth’s commitment to excellence and service. Dr. Provencher’s selection highlights his extraordinary contributions to orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, and military healthcare.

Dr. Provencher, a former Head Team Physician for the New England Patriots and Director of Military Human Performance Programs, is recognized for his groundbreaking work in musculoskeletal care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. He co-founded MOTION (Military Orthopaedic Tracking Injuries Network), the largest global database tracking musculoskeletal outcomes in military personnel, now backed by $50 million annually in research funding.

His surgical expertise spans elite athletes and military personnel, advancing protocols in hip, shoulder, and knee surgery, rehabilitation strategies, and performance optimization. From leading humanitarian surgical missions aboard the USNS Mercy to developing the Navy SEALs’ Tactical Athlete Program, Dr. Provencher’s work continues to set the standard in orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, and human performance.
