It is hard to imagine a colleague more energetic or productive than Matthew T. Provencher, M.D.. Thus, it is no surprise that Matt is winding down his career as an editor of Arthroscopy and Arthroscopy Techniques, because as is so often the case, Matt is winding up for something bigger and better. Thus, we acknowledge Matt for his service and excellence as a journal editor, friend, and leader, and we take a moment to admire Matt’s present accomplishments, and prepare to stand in awe of his future achievement.
And so, please join us in celebrating and thanking Dr. Provencher. Matt began as an Arthroscopy journal reviewer in 2004. Back then, articles came in the mail and reviews were typed, printed, and dutifully mailed back to the journal home office, in an era well before the advent of our modern, electronic peer-review system.
Based on Matt’s excellence as a reviewer, he was promoted to the journal Editorial Board in 2007, and in short order, to the position of Associate Editor in 2008,1 then Deputy Editor in 2010.2 In 2014, Matt was once again promoted, assuming the role and title of Assistant Editor-in-Chief,3 thereby playing a pivotal role in the developmental success of Arthroscopy Techniques, our online-only companion to Arthroscopy. Since the first Technical Note with video was published in 2012,4 and under Matt’s leadership, the volume of Arthroscopy Techniques articles is approaching 1,000.
Along the way, Matt has established himself as a leader of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, just to name a few. Matt has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 5 textbooks. In Matt’s present position as a clinician, researcher, and fellowship faculty at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, he is performing the most difficult arthroscopic and related surgical cases, as evidenced by his current publications as well as articles in press. Readers may stay tuned, because as Matt extricates himself from the day-to-day task of editing our journals, he will doubtless redouble his efforts in publication, research, teaching, clinical care, and leadership in Arthroscopy, Arthroscopy Techniques, AANA, and beyond. In other words, in Matt’s new position as Assistant Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, we anticipate that he will contribute to Arthroscopy, Arthroscopy Techniques, AANA, and other societies in many other capacities. And, if we are being redundant, it is intentional, because Matthew T. Provencher, M.D., is productive beyond the most imaginable of motivated and dedicated boundaries.
We thank Matt and his lovely family for their dedication and service5 to Arthroscopy, Arthroscopy Techniques,6and AANA. We congratulate Matt on his commencement. We eagerly anticipate his future authorial submissions and continued contribution as a leader of our journals.
